In 2007, 160-year-old graves, many of children, and remnants of buildings were uncovered when new classrooms were being built at Tolaga Bay Area School. The buildings were likely those of a mission settlement established by the Reverend Charles Baker in 1843, and the dead were likely to have been Māori who had been living at the mission. The kōiwi (human remains) were subsequently reburied in a community ceremony. I kite mātou i te wāhi nei

I tū mātou ki Whangarā ki Tāwhiti.......................
Whale rider was a 2004 film based on the book of the same name by Witi Ihimaera, which in turn drew some of its inspiration from the story of Paikea, who travelled from Hawaiki on the back of a whale. In this clip from the film a contemporary Paikea, played by Keisha Castle-Hughes, practises a waiata (song), which talks of the nearby Whitirēia meeting house and its carving of Paikea.
